Presenting Untrapped at HIV Research For Prevention (HIVR4P) in Peru

Untrapped recently reached an international audience through its presentation at the HIVR4P conference in Lima, Peru, held from October 6-10, 2024. At the conference, the Mercer team—Annie Potts, Reema Chande, Naahemaa Osei-Tutu, Ellen Jones, Stephane Cadet, and Dr. Chinekwu Obidoa—highlighted Untrapped’s unique approach to addressing teen pregnancy and HIV risk through storytelling. This method, designed to resonate deeply with teens in Middle Georgia, incorporates narratives that bring real-life challenges and decision-making processes to life. The presentation was well-received, with attendees showing particular interest in the curriculum’s ability to blend social context with practical skills, empowering teens with a nuanced understanding of prevention.

Expanding the Intervention in Macon-Bibb County

Back home, Untrapped’s curriculum continues to make strides in Macon-Bibb County, where it directly addresses high rates of teen pregnancy among African American teens. This year, the project expects expanded implementation, with additional support for integrating male-centered discussion prompts and enhanced narrative content. Feedback from local students reflects the program’s impact: teens report increased confidence in making safer choices and a greater awareness of how social and economic factors affect their lives. These updates underscore Untrapped’s commitment to creating lasting change through a curriculum tailored to the needs of this community.

In the Media: Untrapped’s Impact Recognized

Untrapped’s success has garnered media attention as well. An article in The Den recently highlighted the innovative nature of Untrapped, focusing on Dr. Obidoa’s commitment to addressing the root causes of teen pregnancy through community-based storytelling. The project was also featured in a blog post following the HIVR4P conference, where team members shared their experiences presenting Untrapped’s impact to a global audience.

These recent updates reflect Untrapped’s dedication to empowering teens both locally and beyond, as the project continues to grow and adapt to meet the evolving needs of its participants. With ongoing support, Untrapped is positioned to make an even greater impact in the years ahead.
